„Koralowce, rafy koralowe i my; na wspólnej drodze od chłodu do upału” (“Corals, coral reefs, and us; on a shared journey from cold to heat.” ) a lecture by prof. Marek Lewandowski

On 28.04.2025 a lecture organised by a scientific group ,, LEOO’’ was held, as part of the ,, Scientific Platerka “project .

The assembled students and teachers were welcomed in the name of the, Town’s Mayor Michal Litwiniuk, dr. Stanislaw Romanowski, Head of the Department of Education and Social issues and head teacher – Mr. Przemysław Olesiejuk.

The lecture was conducted by Professor Mark Lewandowski – a geologist, geophysicist whose primarily interest revolves around the history of the earth system. His speciality is palaeomagnetism and its applications in reconstructing the positions of the continents over the last billion years.

He led a research on Spitsbergen and Antarctica, Europe and Africa moreover, he organised an exploratory drilling in the USA, Mexico and Japan. Since 1978 he has been associated with Institute of Geophysics in Polish Academy of Sciences. In addition, he was a head of Institute of Geological Sciences, PAN – Polish Academy of Sciences, from 2008 to 2015, and has been an expert of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education since 2004. His most recent scientific domain is raphology, the science of coral reefs.

The scientific lecture on coral reefs was an excellent opportunity to introduce participants to the fascinating world of underwater ecosystems and showed the importance of coral reefs for our planet and their role in marine ecosystems. Prof. Marek Lewandowski highlighted how important it is to understand the role of coral reefs in nature and how their protection is necessary to maintain the balance of marine ecosystems. Students were encouraged to take action to protect the marine environment and reflect on the impact of everyday human activities on the health of the oceans. Participants of that event were impressed by both the quality of the content and the way the lecture was delivered. The topic of coral reefs was discussed in an understandable yet very professional way.

Thanks for an inspiring scientific adventure!
