What is LEOO?

LEOO – Local Earth Observation Observatory

A  science club of teenagers from Secondary School no.2 by the name of Emilia Plater in Biała Podlaska.. The club works under the guidance of Renata Michalczuk – physics teacher and professor Stanisław Lewiński. LEOO cooperates with CBK PAN and the City of Biała Podlaska.

The science group was created in September 2024, when two students Martyna Michałowska and Alicja Stańko of this school, inspired by a project “Kolory Ziemi”(Colours of the Earth) that was made for physics lessons, went to the International Conference EuroGEO Workshop 2024 in Cracow. They represented the idea of creating a group of young people who want to pursue their interests in satellite imagery.

Main goals of LEOO are:
● Gaining useful experiences in satellite imagery
● Popularisation of science
● Discovering new career paths
● Taking part in interactive lessons
● Doing interesting projects
● Cooperation with local communities and institutions
● Promoting the successes of students

Since  then, Local Earth Observation Observatory has developed rapidly. Members of the group take part in reoccurring lectures by Dr. hab. inż. Stanisław Lewiński from CBK PAN and other scientists from Poland and abroad. There are many courses in physics, geography and satellite imagery. LEOO cooperates and shares their work with other young people, monitors changes in the local environment of Biała Podlaska: water pollution, degradation, compares satellite pictures from different years and analyses the differences.
