Remote Sensing as a Tool for Modern Education – A Scientific Conference Organized by the LEOO Group
Remote sensing may seem like a relatively new field of study; however, its origins date back to the 19th century. It is defined as a scientific discipline that enables the collection and analysis of data from a distance using specialized sensors. This topic formed the central theme of our conference, held on 6 March in the newly constructed gymnasium. The programme primarily consisted of lectures delivered by representatives of scientific institutions, and the event attracted numerous students from various secondary schools.
The first speaker, Dr. Stanisław Lewiński, representing the Space Research Centre of the Polish Academy of Sciences and the LEOO group, introduced the fundamentals of remote sensing, including its history and the technical specifications of satellites. He also discussed optimal colour compositions within spectral ranges, which are commonly used for the in-depth analysis of aerial imagery. Participants interested in the subject took notes on methods for processing satellite data and accessing online data sources. One of the most striking aspects of the presentation was the wide range of practical applications of satellite monitoring systems, highlighting how frequently this field influences everyday life, often without our awareness.
A subsequent lecture was delivered by Dr. Sławomir Mikrut from the Faculty of Geodesy at the AGH University of Science and Technology in Kraków. His presentation focused on alternative sources of aerial data, such as drones and aircraft, reflecting the university’s area of specialization. He demonstrated the advantages of aerial photogrammetry, a discipline that seeks to fully exploit modern technological advancements. Increasingly, large and costly aircraft are being replaced by smaller, more economical drones. Although drones have certain limitations, including short battery life and sensitivity to weather conditions, they offer significantly higher-resolution imagery. Consequently, aerial photogrammetry remains as important as satellite-based remote sensing.
One of the most significant applications of remote sensing in Poland was its role in addressing the ecological disaster on the Odra River. Dr. Eng. Katarzyna Osińska-Skotak from the Warsaw University of Technology played an active role in investigating the cause of this disaster. She explained to us how satellite image analysis enabled her team to identify areas affected by the so-called “golden algae.” By detecting chlorophyll produced during algal growth, the team developed an algorithm capable of tracking the spread of the organisms. Comprehensive data could be obtained within just 2–5 days, covering vast areas. These efforts underscored the importance of automation in data processing, satellite product generation, and result verification.
The final lecture, delivered by Anna Bukiewicz-Szul, a representative of the Polish Space Agency (POLSA), focused on the International Space Station (ISS). She explained that the ISS is an orbital laboratory located over 400 kilometres above Earth, circling the planet approximately 16 times per day. She also referred to the recent mission of Sławosz Uznański-Wiśniewski, the second Pole in history to visit the ISS. Drawing on his experiences, the audience learned about the daily responsibilities of astronauts, as well as how they spend their limited free time in space.
As members of the LEOO group, we are proud that our invitation was accepted by such distinguished speakers. Through initiatives such as lectures and educational activities, we aim to promote knowledge of remote sensing among our peers and the wider community. This event was undoubtedly not our last undertaking of this kind.
