How Is Earth Observation Changing the World and Career Paths? – Lecture by Dr Martyna A. Stelmaszczuk-Górska**
On 13 October 2025, we held the first online meeting of the new school year. Our invited speaker was Dr Martyna A. Stelmaszczuk‑Górska from Friedrich Schiller University Jena in Germany. Her lecture focused on the future of Earth Observation, a field of growing strategic importance for our group. In combination with rapid technological progress, Earth Observation is generating a wide range of new and dynamic career opportunities for the next generation of scientists and specialists.
The presentation delivered by Dr Stelmaszczuk‑Górska had previously been featured at the Earth Observation Forum, a conference organised by the Polish Space Agency (POLSA). During the lecture, she introduced several potential project concepts for our club members, outlined possibilities for collaboration and academic support, and shared educational materials designed to facilitate further independent learning in this domain.
Dr Stelmaszczuk‑Górska also discussed selected career pathways associated with Earth Observation and highlighted recent scientific and technological developments, including the expanding role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the unprecedented availability of satellite data for online analysis, modelling and practical exercises. Another key component of the lecture concerned the applied dimension of Earth Observation, particularly its relevance to climate‑change monitoring, crisis‑management systems and sustainable urban planning.
Following the presentation, students had the opportunity to engage directly with Dr Stelmaszczuk‑Górska during a question‑and‑answer session. She shared reflections on her own professional trajectory, the challenges she encountered, and formative experiences from scientific events she attended long before beginning her academic career.
Participants listened with great interest to Dr Stelmaszczuk‑Górska’s inspiring account, which prompted further discussion about our own academic aspirations and potential future professions.
The meeting served not only as an introduction to valuable educational resources and emerging career possibilities, but also as a rare opportunity to speak with a respected expert in the field of Earth Observation and receive informed guidance for future studies.
We express our sincere gratitude to Dr Martyna A. Stelmaszczuk‑Górska for her time, expertise and engagement. We look forward to the possibility of continuing collaboration in the future.
